INFORMATION FOR BUILDERS AND HOMEOWNERS: HOUSEHOLD CABLING - SMART SOLUTIONS

AN INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this guide is to provide information for builders and homeowners of residential homes. This guide will assist you in understanding what you need to know for Fibre to the Home services.

This document does not provide detailed specifications for home wiring, but answers the most commonly asked questions.

The information contained in this document is intended to provide general guidance and recommendations pertaining to the connection of FUZEconnect services to a residential dwelling.

These recommendations are applicable no matter which service provider you choose.

In summary, you will be able to access more facilities in your new home by ensuring that the internal cabling is installed in accordance with the recommendations in this document.

SOME BACKGROUND

Earlier in 2009, the Government has announced it will invest up to $43 billion over eight years to build and operate a National Broadband Network delivering superfast broadband to Australian homes and workplaces.

You can read more about the Governments plans here.

FUZEconnect are already providing fibre services for Phone, Internet and TV, and are proud to be amongst the leaders in providing this technology to Australian homes and business.

WHERE DO I START

During the construction of each home, you can ensure that your home will be able to take advantage of the next generation of technology by installing appropriate cabling.

Cables can be installed after the home is built, however it is more cost effective to install them during construction.

OK - SO WHAT IS NEEDED?

The homeowner and builder should agree on:

  • How many TV/phone / data outlets will be required throughout the home (number and their desired location).

This will determine:-

  • Amount of outlets required to be cabled
  • Details of patching capability and connection type
  • Suitable location / type for a patch panel – if required
  • Number of power points required in each room and near the patch panel

DURING THE BUILDING PHASE

In a typical home, the builder/homeowner is responsible for the following:-

  • Supply and install Lead-in conduit from telecommunications pit in street  to network termination device location (typically -adjacent to electrical meter box)
  • Supply and install a patch panel inside the home – this is optional but recommended
  • Supply and install a power point for the network termination device – suggested to be inside the electrical meter box
  • Supply and install the following cables from the patch panel
    • Television cable to the network termination unit
    • A TV signal splitter if more than one TV point is required
    • minimum of one Telephone  Cat5e cable to the network termination unit (max = 2)
    • minimum of one  Data Cat5e cable to the network termination unit (max = 2)
    • phone / data and TV cables to required locations in the home
    • necessary patch  cables for the patch panel (if required)

AN OVERVIEW OF HOME WIRING

The following illustration shows the components of the FUZEconnect fibre network that deliver phone, internet and TV services to a residential home.

WHAT IS A LEAD-IN CONDUIT?

The lead-in conduit runs from the FUZEconnect pit which is located near the boundary of your property (see drawing below) to the side of your house (typically) adjacent to the electrical meter box.

It is the responsibility of the home-owner to provide a lead-in conduit in order to connect FUZEconnect services to your home. In most cases your builder will install the lead-in conduit as part of your home package.

Lead-in Conduit for FUZEconnect services

When FUZEconnect install the communications pit, a short section of lead-in (‘stub’) is installed, which extends just inside your property, approximately 800mm from the dividing boundary. On an undeveloped block you might see this stub protruding from the ground.

The lead-in conduit should run from this ‘stub’ to the side of your house adjacent to the meter box.

MORE INFORMATION

A lead-in conduit is 25mm communications grade PVC pipe and should be buried at least 450mm deep.

It is important to remember that the fibre-optic cable does not like being bent .Tight curves and 90 degree joins may damage the cable or cause a loss of signal. To be safe the cable should have a bend radius of no more than 10cm.

The lead-in should be installed with a ‘pull through’ rope inside the conduit so the technician can draw the fibre-optic cable through the lead-in pipe when they perform the installation.
